Granit Xhaka will remain at Sunderland after head coach Regis Le Bris ruled out a summer transfer to Chelsea. The declaration followed Sunderland’s 4-2 pre-season defeat to Liverpool in Nashville on Saturday and ends Chelsea’s attempt to reunite the midfielder with Xabi Alonso.

Chelsea submitted an £8 million offer for the 33-year-old this month, but Sunderland rejected it immediately. Granit Xhaka helped Sunderland qualify for the UEFA Europa League during their first season back in the Premier League and remains central to the club’s plans.

Regis Le Bris Ends Transfer Talk

Xabi Alonso coached Granit Xhaka at Bayer Leverkusen and wanted the experienced midfielder at Chelsea. However, Regis Le Bris insisted neither Sunderland nor their captain was interested in reopening discussions.

“No, this topic is closed,” said Le Bris after Sunderland’s 4-2 pre-season friendly defeat by Liverpool in Nashville on Saturday. “He has been really clear about his future. He loves Sunderland, he wants to stay in Sunderland. He wants to make the future of Sunderland. He is a good captain. Great leader.”

The decision gives Sunderland certainty before a season that will include both Premier League and European commitments. Granit Xhaka’s passing, positioning and leadership were key parts of the team’s successful return to the top flight.

Sunderland Planning Quiet Transfer Window

Sunderland have made only one senior addition so far, signing Belgium defender Thomas Meunier on a free transfer from Lille. Regis Le Bris expects more movement but said the club would not repeat last summer’s 14-player rebuild.

“It’s going to be quiet. Under the radar, right? I won’t give you information. Because I think we are working hard behind the scenes, and it’s really important to be quiet because otherwise it’s a mess.”

Official club news and transfer updates are available through the Sunderland website.
