Ivan Cleary has ruled out coaching the Penrith Panthers and New South Wales State of Origin team together in 2027, confirming at Penrith this week that his attention will remain on his final two NRL seasons.
The decision leaves New South Wales searching for a possible one-year coach if Laurie Daley steps away. Laurie Daley is yet to confirm his plans after guiding New South Wales to a series-deciding victory over Queensland at Suncorp Stadium last week.
The Origin coaching discussion comes amid other contract stories across the NRL, including how Billy Walters is chasing a Brisbane Broncos extension after his ACL return.
Ivan Cleary Commits to Penrith Panthers
Ivan Cleary was linked with the New South Wales role after announcing he would leave the Penrith Panthers at the end of 2027. However, the four-time premiership coach dismissed any plan to hold both positions next season.
“That’s very humbling but I’m fully focused on the job at hand the rest of this year and next year,” Ivan Cleary said.
“I’m going to give Panthers my all and I’m looking forward to doing that.”
The official Penrith Panthers succession plan confirms assistant coach Peter Wallace will take charge from the 2028 NRL season.
New South Wales Await Laurie Daley Decision
Laurie Daley is not contracted beyond 2026 and has spoken about the personal demands of coaching New South Wales. His possible departure would require a short-term appointment before Ivan Cleary becomes available.
Ivan Cleary watched the State of Origin decider from Bali and praised Laurie Daley for handling the pressure. He was also delighted to see his son, Nathan Cleary, named player of the series.
Nathan Cleary is expected to return for the Penrith Panthers against the Brisbane Broncos on Thursday. His comeback strengthens a side sitting two wins clear of the Warriors in the race for the NRL minor premiership.
Hooker Mitch Kenny remains sidelined after syndesmosis surgery and a broken leg. Mitch Kenny has also rejected the open market and agreed to remain with the Penrith Panthers.
