Daly Cherry-Evans has declined to confirm whether he will activate his player option with the Sydney Roosters for the 2027 NRL season. Speaking at training as the finals approach, the 37-year-old said his focus remained on the opportunity ahead in 2026.
The veteran has played all 16 games for the Sydney Roosters this season after ending his long association with the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles. His refusal to reveal his plans means questions about his future are likely to continue through the closing rounds.
The former Queensland captain’s situation follows another State of Origin story in which Laurie Daley rejected made-up claims after the series win.
Daly Cherry-Evans remains focused
“I’ve said it for the last few years, I’m playing with house money,” Daly Cherry-Evans said.
“It’s been a hell of a ride and whenever it ends I’m going to be so grateful for how long I’ve been able to play this game.”
Daly Cherry-Evans has filled the five-eighth role for the Sydney Roosters while continuing to control matches through his passing and kicking. The experienced playmaker has recorded nine try assists and eight forced dropouts this season.
“But right now the fire is burning, there’s a great opportunity in front of us, I just have to make sure I keep really focussed,” Daly Cherry-Evans said.
Premiership record within reach
Daly Cherry-Evans has made 368 NRL appearances and sits third on the all-time NRL and NSWRL premiership list. Fitness permitting, he will pass Cooper Cronk’s mark of 372 matches during the run towards the 2026 finals.
Cameron Smith remains well clear at the top with 430 appearances. Daly Cherry-Evans would probably need to continue for at least two more seasons to challenge that record.
Whether the record influences his decision remains unknown, but Daly Cherry-Evans has made it clear that his desire to compete remains strong. His career and season statistics are available through the official Sydney Roosters player profile.
