Nathan Cleary has dismissed the prospect of leaving rugby league while hinting that his future could remain with the Penrith Panthers beyond 2027. Speaking on Monday after leading New South Wales to a State of Origin series victory, the halfback said his desire for more success was growing.
The 28-year-old can negotiate with rival NRL clubs from November 1 next year but has not confirmed any plan to test the market. He said a decision about his next contract would receive attention over the coming weeks.
Another injury story affecting an NRL star is the Latrell Mitchell update that has left the South Sydney Rabbitohs waiting.
Nathan Cleary rules out code switch
“If anything, that drive is probably growing even more,” Nathan Cleary said. “It’s just a feeling I have. I feel like I can still get so much better.”
Nathan Cleary had previously said he was open to trying rugby union later in his career. His latest comments suggest he remains fully committed to rugby league and the Penrith Panthers.
“I’ve always said rugby league is my passion. I’ve loved it for as long as I can remember, so it’s always going to be life for me,” Nathan Cleary said.
Parramatta Eels target Jack Howarth
The Parramatta Eels are reportedly pursuing Melbourne Storm centre Jack Howarth as coach Jason Ryles rebuilds his roster. The Perth Bears and Papua New Guinea Chiefs are also interested in Jack Howarth, who is contracted for 2027 but has permission to examine his options.
“I expect Parramatta to make more signings than just Jarome Luai,” journalist Brent Read said. “They’re in the market for outside backs. They’re looking at Jack Howarth if Jack’s allowed to leave Melbourne.”
Mitch Kenny wants Panthers extension
Mitch Kenny has also stated his desire to remain with the Penrith Panthers as contract talks continue. The hooker is nearing a return from the serious leg injury he suffered against the Dolphins.
“I’m chomping on the bit to get back, but there’s no point coming back if I’m a little bit underdone,” Mitch Kenny said.
