Billy Walters is hoping to secure a new Brisbane Broncos contract after returning from an anterior cruciate ligament injury through the Queensland Cup. The 32-year-old has played three matches for the Souths Logan Magpies and wants to help the defending NRL premiers revive their 2026 season.
Billy Walters missed the 2025 NRL Grand Final after rupturing his left anterior cruciate ligament during the qualifying final victory over the Canberra Raiders. He joined the celebrations and lifted the trophy with captain Adam Reynolds, but was the only player in the premiership photograph not wearing playing kit.
Elsewhere at an NRL club, Benji Marshall rejected rumours of a fractured relationship with Jarome Luai.
Premiership photo drives Billy Walters
“I love playing rugby league, so I want to keep playing, and I’ve always loved the Broncos,” Billy Walters said.
Billy Walters has previously represented other NRL clubs but believes playing for the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium provides a different feeling. His father, Kevin Walters, won five premierships with the club.
“We’ve got a big picture of when we won the comp last year of us all lifting the trophy, and I’m the only one that’s not wearing playing kit,” Billy Walters said. “I just want to get another photo like that, but me in playing kit. So they’re big motivating factors.”
Contract discussions are continuing, with Billy Walters confident an agreement can be reached.
“I’m pretty sure the club are pretty keen to keep me and I obviously want to stay here,” Billy Walters said.
Braithen Scott supports difficult recovery
The latest injury was the second reconstruction on Billy Walters’ left knee after he underwent the same procedure in 2020. Brisbane Broncos teenager Braithen Scott became an important source of support after suffering a knee injury during the same week.
“We’ve just done everything together - that’s been such a huge help for me mentally,” Billy Walters said.
Billy Walters now wants to prove his fitness and earn an NRL recall before the season ends. His experience at hooker and in the halves would give the Brisbane Broncos another option during their late-season push.
