Payne Haas’ Samoa commitment is locked in for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup, with the Brisbane Broncos prop rejecting any suggestion he could return to Australia. His decision strengthens Samoa before the tournament begins across Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea on October 15.
Payne Haas played four Tests for Australia before representing his Samoan heritage through his mother, Joan Haas, during the 2025 Pacific Championships. He helped Samoa reach the Pacific Cup final after starring in a 34-6 victory over Tonga.
The forward’s dominant State of Origin campaign also featured in the Laurie Daley response to claims after New South Wales’ series win.
"I made my decision last year to move to Samoa from Australia," Payne Haas said.
"The kind of person I am, I wouldn't backflip on them. I want to represent my mum, my grandmother and my grandad as well, and there is no way in hell that I would (backflip)."
Samoa finished runner-up to Australia at the 2022 Rugby League World Cup and will face France, Papua New Guinea and Tonga in this year’s pool stage. The official Rugby League World Cup website confirms the tournament will run from October 15 to November 15.
Payne Haas will lead a powerful pack containing Francis Molo, Jaydn Su’A, Junior Paulo and Terrell May. Jarome Luai, Brian To’o, Stephen Crichton and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow give Samoa proven attacking quality.
"With the kind of calibre of players we have got, there is a great chance, but that is still far away," Payne Haas said.
The 26-year-old remains focused on helping Brisbane Broncos rescue their NRL season before joining South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2027. Brisbane Broncos must win their remaining eight matches to retain any hope of defending the premiership.
