Sam Docherty has reflected on the physical and mental hardships behind his 13-year AFL career, one year after retiring following 184 games with Brisbane Lions and Carlton Blues.
The former Carlton Blues co-captain survived two bouts of cancer, three knee reconstructions and repeated injuries. Yet he said the mental strain of his final season, rather than his body, ultimately convinced him to stop.
His retirement came amid difficult list decisions across the AFL, a theme continuing as Damien Hardwick prepares Gold Coast Suns for a possible Ben King exit.
Obsession Helped and Hurt
Sam Docherty said the obsessive habits required in professional sport drove his rehabilitation, including 400-metre runs between chemotherapy cycles. He also acknowledged that the same personality contributed to a gambling problem.
“As an athlete, they’re great traits to have at times, but they can also be incredibly unhealthy,” Sam Docherty said.
Two serious knee injuries then cost Sam Docherty consecutive seasons. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer before later undergoing four chemotherapy cycles when the disease spread.
A Goal That Changed Everything
Six months after beginning chemotherapy, Sam Docherty returned against Richmond Tigers before 72,000 supporters in the 2022 season opener and kicked the goal he considers his greatest football memory.
“It was just a goal,” Sam Docherty said. “But I’d been at rock bottom.”
Sam Docherty finished second to Patrick Cripps in the 2022 Carlton Blues best and fairest. His comeback reshaped how he measured success, placing personal growth and helping others above awards.
Carlton Blues confirmed his retirement and 184-game career before his final appearance against Hawthorn Hawks in 2025.
