Ben King could leave the Gold Coast Suns at the end of the 2026 AFL season, but coach Damien Hardwick said on Thursday that the club has contingency plans if the key forward pursues a reported move to the Hawthorn Football Club.
The 26-year-old had appeared likely to sign a new Gold Coast Suns contract before reconsidering his future. Ben King is now leaning towards returning to Victoria with his partner, making his decision a major part of the coming player-movement period.
The situation emerges as another Victorian club begins a major appointment, with the Carlton Blues coach search entering its formal interview stage.
Gold Coast Suns Prepare for Either Outcome
“We'd love for him to stay, but we have some things in place if he does leave,” Damien Hardwick told reporters on Thursday.
“It is important, but it won't be the end of the world if Ben leaves.”
Damien Hardwick pointed to the arrivals of Christian Petracca and Daniel Rioli as proof that the Gold Coast Suns can recruit established players. His comments also showed why list managers need several options when a restricted free agent remains undecided.
Hawthorn Football Club Retains Mitch Lewis
The Hawthorn Football Club confirmed a new four-year contract for Mitch Lewis less than 24 hours after Jack Gunston committed to play in 2027. Mitch Lewis has kicked 30 goals in 18 matches this season after battling injuries throughout his career.
Mabior Chol is already contracted for next season, while Calsher Dear remains without a 2027 deal. Adding Ben King would give the Hawthorn Football Club another major tall-forward option.
The official Mitch Lewis contract announcement confirms his long-term commitment to the club.
