Georgie Rankin will miss the entire AFLW season after suffering a serious neck injury during a Geelong Cats training session. The 28-year-old defender was taken directly to hospital after receiving an accidental elbow to the neck and was later diagnosed with a carotid artery dissection.
The injury involves a small tear in part of the arterial wall, and Georgie Rankin will now focus on making a full recovery. Her absence is a major blow for the Geelong Cats as they prepare for their season opener next month.

Geelong Cats Put Health First
Geelong Cats general manager Dr Dom Condo said the club’s medical staff acted quickly after assessing Georgie Rankin at training.
“It’s incredibly disappointing that Georgie will miss the season,” Dr Dom Condo said.
“Our priority is Georgie’s health and wellbeing, and as a club we are committed to supporting her throughout her recovery and ensuring she returns to full health.”
Dr Dom Condo also praised the club’s medical team for arranging prompt specialist treatment.
“I want to acknowledge the work of our medical team, whose thorough assessment ensured Georgie received prompt and specialist care.”
Georgie Rankin Remains Part of Squad
Georgie Rankin made her AFLW debut when the Geelong Cats entered the competition in 2019. Although she will not play this season, she will remain involved with the team throughout her recovery.
“While Georgie won’t take to the field this season, she’ll remain an important part of our program and will stay connected to the group as she continues her recovery,” Dr Dom Condo said.
