Josh Worrell has been charged with two traffic offences after the vehicle he was driving struck a pedestrian last Friday morning while the Adelaide Football Club defender was travelling to training.
The accident occurred at about 8:30am and involved a 29-year-old pedestrian. Josh Worrell took the injured person to hospital but did not report the incident to police until later that afternoon.
Elsewhere in the AFL, James Hird has emerged as a leading candidate for the Essendon Football Club coaching position.
South Australia Police charged Josh Worrell on Wednesday with aggravated driving without due care. He was also charged with failing to present to police within 90 minutes of an accident involving injury.
The 25-year-old is due to appear in court at a date yet to be announced. The charges are allegations, and no finding of guilt has been made.
Adelaide Football Club coach Matthew Nicks said the club was supporting Josh Worrell following the accident.
“But we're just doing whatever we can to support him through that,” Matthew Nicks said.
Matthew Nicks also clarified that his earlier “wild child” description of Josh Worrell was part of a private joke between the pair. He described the defender as a respected figure inside the playing group.
“He's now one of our most professional,” Matthew Nicks said. “Guys follow him. He's a real leader at the club.”
Josh Worrell was selected with pick No. 28 in the 2019 AFL National Draft. His career history and playing role are available through the Adelaide Football Club’s official player profile.
