Jed Walter has rejected interest from several AFL rivals to sign a three-year contract extension with the Gold Coast Suns. Announced on Tuesday, the deal keeps the 21-year-old key forward at his hometown club until the end of the 2029 season.
The Essendon Bombers had led the pursuit, while the Geelong Cats, Collingwood Magpies and Hawthorn Hawks were also interested. Retaining Jed Walter gives the Gold Coast Suns another core player developed through their academy system.
Elsewhere in the AFL, a Jason Horne-Francis suspension has added to the Port Adelaide Power injury crisis.
Jed Walter commits to hometown club
"I'm stoked to have signed on for a further three years with the club," Jed Walter said.
Jed Walter grew up on the Gold Coast before progressing through the Gold Coast Suns Academy. He is now one of 17 academy graduates on the club’s AFL list, alongside Bodhi Uwland and Zeke Uwland.
"Having grown up on the Gold Coast, been part of the academy and now playing at AFL level for the Suns, the Gold Coast is home and there's nowhere else I would rather play," Jed Walter said.
The decision comes despite a difficult campaign for the 14th-placed Gold Coast Suns, who hold a 7-10 record. Jed Walter remains confident about the club’s direction under coach Damien Hardwick.
Forward plans taking shape
Jed Walter has kicked a career-best 23 goals from 12 matches during his third AFL season. The Gold Coast Suns originally selected him with pick No.3 in the 2023 AFL Draft.
The club must now settle the futures of fellow forwards Jamarra Ugle-Hagan and Ben King. Damien Hardwick has described Jamarra Ugle-Hagan as a long-term player, while free agent Ben King continues to attract interstate interest.
Keeping Jed Walter provides stability as the Gold Coast Suns attempt to rebuild their forward line and recover from a poor run of results. Player information and career statistics are available through the official Gold Coast Suns profile.
