Tom Sparrow has emerged as a major target for the Essendon Bombers, with the club reportedly prepared to consider a deal approaching $1 million per season. The Port Adelaide Power are also interested in the Melbourne Demons midfielder ahead of the 2026 AFL free agency period.
The unrestricted free agent has produced his best season under Melbourne Demons coach Steven King and is ranked 41st across the competition. Offers above $800,000 are expected, although the Melbourne Demons remain determined to retain the 26-year-old.
Another South Australian star attracting attention is Izak Rankine, who is leading the Adelaide Crows finals push.
Essendon Bombers plan midfield rebuild
The Essendon Bombers view Tom Sparrow as a player who could strengthen their midfield immediately. His physical work around stoppages and defensive running would suit a team facing uncertainty around Zach Merrett.
The Port Adelaide Power are also monitoring Tom Sparrow as Zak Butters considers his future. A move would allow the South Australian to return to his home state.
Tom Sparrow remains contracted to the Melbourne Demons until the end of the season. His status is confirmed on the official AFL 2026 free agents list.
Gryan Miers linked with Carlton Blues
Geelong Cats premiership forward Gryan Miers is also being viewed as a possible trade option despite being contracted until 2028. The Carlton Blues have been linked with the 27-year-old, while a reunion with Steven King at the Melbourne Demons is another possibility.
Gryan Miers has played in the Victorian Football League after managing a partial anterior cruciate ligament tear. His recent returns include 30, 27 and 24 disposals, with 10 tackles and three goals in his latest appearance.
“There are clubs looking at him, very confident they can get him out of Geelong,” journalist Tom Morris said.
Geelong Cats coach Chris Scott has confirmed Gryan Miers will return for Thursday’s AFL match against the St Kilda Saints.
“He will play, that is in a really good spot for him and us in my opinion,” Chris Scott said.
