James Hird has emerged as a leading candidate for the Essendon Football Club coaching position after meeting with club officials, while interim coach Dean Solomon said Wednesday at Windy Hill that his focus remains on the current season.
Dean Solomon’s prospects have weakened following six consecutive defeats, including Sunday’s 90-point loss to the Brisbane Lions. Essendon Football Club has won only once across its past 30 AFL matches.
Elsewhere in the AFL, Mac Andrew and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan have denied misconduct after a Gold Coast Suns review.
Essendon Coaching Process Continues
James Hird has declared himself “all in” and confirmed his participation in Essendon Football Club’s coaching process. The former coach is seeking a return 11 years after leaving the position.
“I haven't spoken to Hirdy for a couple of weeks now,” Dean Solomon said.
“He's expressed his interest in the job and he's part of the process, but outside of that I haven't spoken to Hirdy.”
Dean Solomon has not confirmed whether he will formally apply for the permanent position. However, the 2000 premiership player has said he intends to remain involved with Essendon Football Club next season.
“I just haven't had time to think about it,” Dean Solomon said. “This role is full-on, and especially the current-day situation we're in.”
The club returned to Windy Hill for a light training session alongside its AFLW squad on Wednesday. Young forward Nate Caddy has also provided a boost by signing until the end of 2031.
Dean Solomon continues to test Ben McKay as a forward after the defender produced 13 scoring shots across four AFL games. Ben McKay is now working on his off-ball play in the VFL.
Essendon Football Club faces the Greater Western Sydney Giants at Marvel Stadium on Sunday.
