Australia vs Bangladesh was decided by a composed chase and a dominant spin performance as the visitors secured a four wicket victory in the opening T20 international on Wednesday. Cooper Connolly starred with the bat, while debutants Joel Davies and Nikhil Chaudhary made encouraging starts as Australia reached 6 for 133 in 18.2 overs to chase down Bangladesh’s 131 and take a 1 to 0 lead in the three match series.
The result provided a strong response from Australia after suffering a disappointing ODI series defeat against Bangladesh last week. With the T20 World Cup cycle continuing to build momentum, several young players seized their opportunity on the international stage.
Connolly continues breakout campaign
Cooper Connolly once again underlined why he is regarded as one of Australia’s most exciting young talents.
Fresh from scoring his maiden international century in the final ODI of the recent series, Connolly produced a match defining knock of 47 from just 27 deliveries. His innings featured aggressive stroke play and smart shot selection on a surface that offered assistance to bowlers throughout the contest.
Bangladesh struck early when Shoriful Islam removed Josh Inglis for five before Mustafizur Rahman dismissed Australian captain Mitchell Marsh for 13. Australia found themselves under pressure at 2 for 38 inside the opening five overs.
Connolly responded confidently, sharing a valuable 40 run partnership with Tim David. David contributed 20 runs before falling to Mehidy Hasan, but Connolly continued to control the chase and shift momentum back towards Australia.
His dismissal while attempting a boundary off debutant Abdul Gaffar Saqlain briefly reopened the contest. However, his contribution had already placed Australia in a strong position.
Speaking after the match, Marsh praised the young all rounder’s continued development.
“He has had a taste of international cricket over the past 12 months and he is only going to continue to grow and get better the more comfortable he feels,” Marsh said.
“It is great to see him bat like that on what was a reasonably tricky wicket.”
Debutants make immediate impact
Australia’s new faces delivered important contributions in difficult conditions.
Nikhil Chaudhary scored 18 runs during the chase and looked comfortable during his first appearance at international level. While his innings was cut short, he demonstrated composure against Bangladesh’s varied bowling attack.
Joel Davies enjoyed an even more memorable debut. The young all rounder not only contributed with the ball but remained unbeaten at the end of the chase, helping guide Australia home alongside Xavier Bartlett.
Davies later explained how adapting to Bangladesh’s smaller grounds was a key part of his strategy.
“Here in Bangladesh, the grounds are a fair bit smaller than in Australia, so if there were any parts of the ground that were slightly bigger, I had to use that to my advantage,” Davies said.
The performances of Australia’s debutants were highlighted by senior spinner Adam Zampa, who praised how naturally they settled into the team environment.
Australian spinners dominate Bangladesh
Australia’s victory was built on a superb bowling display led by their spin attack.
After Bangladesh elected to bat first, the home side made a positive start and reached 52 runs during the powerplay. However, Australia gradually tightened its grip through disciplined bowling and regular wickets.
Adam Zampa and Joel Davies were the standout performers. Zampa claimed 3 for 18 while Davies collected 3 for 17, helping restrict Bangladesh to 131 all out.
The Australian spinners combined for nine wickets, setting a new benchmark as the most wickets taken by Australian spin bowlers in a single T20 international innings.
Zampa also reached a significant personal milestone, becoming the first Australian male player to take 150 wickets in T20 internationals.
“Obviously, a proud achievement,” Zampa said.
“It means I have been around for a long time.”
The experienced leg spinner was later named player of the match for his contribution.
Fast bowler Spencer Johnson also made a successful return to international cricket after a 15 month absence. Opening the bowling, he delivered an economical spell of 1 for 10 from two overs and immediately added pressure to Bangladesh’s batting lineup.
Bangladesh fail to capitalise on strong start
Despite their promising powerplay, Bangladesh struggled to maintain momentum throughout their innings.
Mehidy Hasan was the standout batter with an unbeaten 29, while stand in captain Towhid Hridoy managed only eight runs. Australia’s bowlers consistently applied pressure through the middle overs, preventing Bangladesh from building meaningful partnerships.
Bangladesh pace bowling coach Talha Jubair acknowledged that the hosts made poor decisions after their strong opening phase.
“Our powerplay was excellent, we scored 52 in six overs, but from there we could not carry on,” Jubair said.
“We went too far for boundaries when we could have built a partnership. We lost three wickets between overs seven and 15, where we needed to build our innings.”
Those middle overs ultimately proved decisive, as Bangladesh failed to post a total capable of fully challenging Australia.
Series advantage for Australia
The victory gives Australia an important advantage in the three match T20I series and continues the encouraging emergence of several younger players within the national setup.
Connolly’s continued rise, the strong debut performances from Davies and Chaudhary, and another milestone achievement for Zampa combined to create a successful outing for the visitors.
Australia will now aim to seal the series in the second match, while Bangladesh faces the challenge of improving its batting consistency after letting a promising start slip away in the series opener.
