England edge past Ireland by four wickets in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, securing their second consecutive victory of the tournament after chasing down a target of 119 at Southampton. Despite a spirited challenge from Ireland and an early wobble in the chase, England reached 119 for six in 17.3 overs to maintain their unbeaten start and strengthen their position in the group standings.
The victory was far from straightforward for the hosts.
Ireland produced a disciplined bowling performance and briefly threatened an upset after reducing England to 35 for three during the powerplay. Aimee Maguire played a key role in that fightback, removing both Amy Jones and Danni Wyatt Hodge in quick succession to put England under pressure.
However, captain Nat Sciver Brunt and former skipper Heather Knight steadied the innings with a composed partnership that shifted momentum back in England’s favour.
Ireland Finish on 118 for Nine
Ireland’s innings never fully gathered momentum against a disciplined England bowling attack.
The visitors finished on 118 for nine from their 20 overs after regular wickets prevented any significant partnerships from developing.
England spinner Sophie Ecclestone was particularly effective, claiming three wickets for 22 runs in her four overs. Her late burst included the dismissals of Arlene Kelly and Cara Murray in a double wicket maiden that effectively ended Ireland’s hopes of a late surge.
Charlie Dean also made an important contribution, removing Leah Paul during a crucial middle phase of the innings.
Ireland did find some late runs through Laura Little, whose aggressive hitting in the final over helped lift the total above 100. Little struck four boundaries in a lively unbeaten innings that gave her side at least a fighting chance heading into the chase.
Early England Collapse Creates Drama
England’s pursuit began confidently before Ireland struck back.
Wyatt Hodge played aggressively at the top of the order and helped England move to 27 without loss. However, Ireland quickly turned the match on its head as Maguire removed Jones and Wyatt Hodge in the same over.
The pressure increased when Orla Prendergast bowled Alice Capsey, leaving England at 35 for three inside six overs.
For a brief period, Ireland sensed a genuine opportunity to claim a major upset.
Their bowlers maintained tight lines and their fielding remained energetic throughout the powerplay and middle overs.
Sciver Brunt and Knight Steady the Chase
England’s experienced leaders responded when their team needed them most.
Sciver Brunt and Knight gradually rebuilt the innings through smart running and calculated strokeplay. Rather than taking unnecessary risks, the pair focused on rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries.
As the partnership developed, England regained control of the chase.
Knight struck a valuable 26 before falling lbw to Prendergast after Ireland successfully reviewed the on field decision.
Sciver Brunt remained the key figure, moving to 48 before retiring hurt as a precaution due to calf tightness. At the time of her departure, England were within touching distance of victory.
The England and Wales Cricket Board later confirmed that the captain had experienced calf tightness and was being assessed by team medical staff.
Ecclestone Earns Player of the Match
Ecclestone’s performance with the ball earned her Player of the Match honours after helping restrict Ireland to a manageable total.
Her control throughout the middle and death overs ensured Ireland could never fully accelerate, while her late wickets removed any chance of a significant final over assault.
England eventually crossed the line at 119 for six after a tense finish, sealing the victory with a wide delivery in the 18th over.
Following the match, Sciver Brunt downplayed concerns about her calf issue and said she did not want to take any unnecessary risks. Ireland captain Gaby Lewis acknowledged her side’s total was below par but praised the effort and energy shown by her players throughout the contest.

England Maintain Perfect Start
The win means England have now collected two victories from their opening two matches of the tournament. Their next challenge comes against Scotland at Headingley, while Ireland will look to bounce back when they face New Zealand.
Although England ultimately got the job done, Ireland’s spirited performance demonstrated they can trouble stronger opponents if they produce a complete display with both bat and ball.
