As Australia prepares for the FIFA World Cup 2026, Nestory Irankunda has become one of the biggest names in the Socceroos squad. The 20-year-old forward, born in a Tanzanian refugee camp to Burundian parents, is attracting attention ahead of Australia's opening match against Turkey. Irankunda Embraces New Role
Irankunda admitted he never expected players from African backgrounds to become some of the most recognisable faces in the national team.
"It's crazy because who would have thought?" Irankunda told AAP.
"Now that it's happening, everybody's like 'wow'. But I never thought it would be possible — maybe one day, but not this early."
