Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday in Odense, prompting the match to be abandoned as medical staff treated the midfielder on the field. The Danish Football Association later confirmed Eriksen was conscious and undergoing further examinations in hospital after the incident occurred during the second half with Denmark leading 2 1. The situation matters because it revived memories of Eriksen’s cardiac arrest during Euro 2021 and immediately raised concerns across the football world.
Television footage showed Eriksen clutching his chest during an off the ball moment in the 65th minute before falling to the ground.
Players from both teams quickly reacted as Ukraine coaching staff signalled urgently for medical personnel to enter the field.
The match eventually ended early after discussions involving officials, coaches and players.
Danish federation confirms Eriksen is conscious
Shortly after the incident, the Danish Football Association released an update through social media confirming Eriksen’s condition.
The federation initially said Eriksen was conscious and doing well under the circumstances.
A more detailed update followed from Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen.
“Christian is doing well and left the field himself. As I see it, the pacemaker is beating as it should,” Boesen said.
Boesen confirmed Eriksen had briefly lost consciousness before recovering quickly.
“He very quickly regained consciousness, and we were quickly in contact with him.”
Medical staff transferred Eriksen for further examinations to determine the cause of the collapse.
“Now he needs to be examined further in the hospital to find out what caused the incident,” Boesen added.
The doctor also said Eriksen wanted reassurance passed on to teammates.
“We are in constant contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to greet all the players and say that he was OK.”
Match abandoned after discussions between teams
Play remained suspended while Eriksen received treatment on the field.
Supporters inside the stadium initially fell silent before chants of Eriksen’s name spread around the venue.
The referee officially abandoned the match in the 79th minute after speaking with both coaching staffs and player groups.
At the time of abandonment, Denmark held a 2 1 lead.
Following confirmation that the match would not continue, players from both teams gathered together on the field.
Television coverage showed players standing in circles with coaching staff while discussing the situation.
Many players appeared emotional as teams later walked around the stadium acknowledging supporters.
Incident revives memories of Euro 2021 collapse
The scenes immediately brought back memories of Eriksen’s collapse during Denmark’s opening match at Euro 2021 against Finland in Copenhagen.
During that match, Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest and required extensive medical treatment on the field before being revived.
He later revealed he had effectively died for several minutes during the incident.
Eriksen previously said he had been told he was “gone from this world for five minutes.”
Following that medical emergency, Eriksen was fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator and eventually resumed his professional career.
His return to elite football became one of the sport’s most closely followed comeback stories.
Eriksen returned to action 259 days after the collapse and continued competing at club and international level.
Eriksen remains central figure for club and country
Eriksen has remained one of Denmark’s most important footballers throughout his career.
The midfielder played for clubs including Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, Brentford and Manchester United before moving to German side Wolfsburg in 2025.
He remains under contract with Wolfsburg through the end of the 2026 27 season.
At international level, Eriksen has long been regarded as one of Denmark’s greatest players and most influential midfielders.
Neither Denmark nor Ukraine qualified for the upcoming World Cup, making the friendly part of preparations outside competitive fixtures.
Sunday’s match, however, quickly became secondary after concerns over Eriksen’s health.
Football world awaits further medical updates
Attention now shifts toward the results of hospital examinations and any additional information from Danish medical staff.
The Danish federation has so far stressed that Eriksen remains conscious and stable while further tests continue.
For teammates, supporters and the wider football community, the priority remains understanding what caused another frightening incident involving one of the game’s most recognisable players.
