Matildas midfielder Emily van Egmond says Australia will lean on inside knowledge of Mexico as they return to home soil for Saturday’s friendly at Newcastle’s McDonald Jones Stadium.
The match is Australia’s first at home since their 1-0 Women’s Asian Cup final loss to Japan in March, and it starts another key step toward next year’s Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Gielnik Gives Australia Mexico Insight
Emily Gielnik is not in the squad for the June friendlies, but her experience in Mexico’s first division has become useful for the Matildas.
Most of Mexico’s national team players compete in that league, giving Australia a clearer view of an opponent on a 15-game unbeaten run.
"Obviously we know Em really well here, and she's been a big part of this team, whether she's been in or out," van Egmond said ahead of the first of two friendlies against Mexico.
"But she seems to be really enjoying herself, and she's only spoken really positively about it.
"It's going to be physical and a good game for us. It just poses a different challenge for the World Cup."
Montemurro Expects Tough Mexico Test
Matildas coach Joe Montemurro said facing Mexico is a useful part of World Cup planning because Australia need to deal with different playing styles.
Australia are ranked No.15, while Mexico sit 13 places lower, but Montemurro said the gap does not reflect the quality of the Central Americans.
"They're definitely a top 20 team," he said.
"The league is growing, and there's a lot of investment, so they're a top, top team. Their ranking doesn't mimic where I believe they should be.
"They're a tidy team technically, and even structurally they're very good, so, collectively, what they've done in Mexico is something to be really applauded."
Saturday’s match will be special for van Egmond in her home town, while Ellie Carpenter could earn her 100th cap and Caitlin Foord could reach 150 appearances across the two friendlies. Official team updates are available through the Matildas website.
