Mark Nawaqanitawase is set to make his return for the Sydney Roosters in Friday night's NRL clash against the Canberra Raiders, giving the star winger a timely chance to strengthen his case for State of Origin selection. The 25-year-old has not played since undergoing ankle surgery in May, but Roosters coach Trent Robinson confirmed he has successfully completed training and is expected to feature at GIO Stadium. His comeback arrives at an important stage of the season as NSW selectors prepare for the upcoming Origin team announcement.
Roosters Welcome Back Key Attacking Threat
Nawaqanitawase was initially named on the bench after recovering from the ankle injury that sidelined him for several weeks. His return is particularly important for the Roosters, who have struggled in attack during their past two matches, scoring just 16 points combined.
Robinson was pleased with what he saw from the winger during training.
"He (Nawaqanitawase) is looking well. Yesterday was the real test for us to make sure that he was right to tick off everything he needed after that syndesmosis," Robinson said.
"So it’s looking good for him to play tomorrow.
"He’s a high-quality player, but ... it’s just a team concept rather than an individual that’s going to change it."
While Nawaqanitawase's athletic ability and finishing skills could provide an immediate lift, Robinson stressed that improving results will require a collective effort from the entire squad.
Origin Opportunity on the Line
The former rugby union international was considered a potential NSW option before injury interrupted his season. With the Blues preparing to announce their squad for Game Two, Friday's match presents an opportunity to remind selectors of his quality.
Competition for a wing position remains strong. Tolu Koula has been cleared after progressing through concussion protocols, while Penrith youngster Casey McLean is also being discussed as a contender for the vacant spot.
For Nawaqanitawase, a strong performance against Canberra could put his name back into the selection conversation.
Raiders Focused on Building Momentum
Canberra enter the contest looking to improve consistency after an uneven start to their campaign. Coach Ricky Stuart is also dealing with speculation surrounding the future of second-rower Hudson Young, whose contract expires at the end of 2027.
Stuart made it clear he hopes Young remains a long-term Raider.
"I’m sure he’ll be a one-club player, and he’s got every capability in the world to be our captain at the club one day," Stuart said.
"He’s a Raider, and his future’s here, and he’s such an integral part of the team.
"He had a lot of adversity as a young player that the club stuck by him with, and I feel his performances are for the club."
Canberra will be without centre Sebastian Kris because of concussion, while Daine Laurie shifts into the No.3 jersey after impressing in multiple roles. Jayden Brailey also returns after recovering from concussion.
The Friday night clash now carries extra significance, with Nawaqanitawase chasing an Origin dream and both teams eager to gain momentum as the NRL season enters a critical stretch.
