Brisbane Broncos star Ali Brigginshaw has announced she will step down as captain ahead of her final NRLW season, ending one of the most successful leadership eras in the competition. The Queensland and Jillaroos great revealed the decision was made after months of consideration as she looks to support the next generation of leaders within the club. Brigginshaw also addressed the Broncos decision to rename a meeting room in her honour following controversy involving former captain Gorden Tallis.
Brigginshaw leaves the captaincy after leading Brisbane to four NRLW premierships across a decorated 56 match career.
The veteran said the decision reflected both timing and a desire to help others develop.
“I've made the decision to step down as captain in my final year,” Brigginshaw said.
Brigginshaw wants next generation to lead
The Broncos veteran explained she had been considering the move for some time before deciding this season was the right moment.
She said stepping aside would allow emerging leaders to take on greater responsibility while still benefiting from her experience.
“I've been thinking about it for the last couple of months, and I feel like the time is right.”
“I've done so many amazing things here, but there's a next group of leaders that I want to see come through, and I want to be able to support them in my last year.”
Brigginshaw also admitted relinquishing the role would allow her to enjoy her final season differently.
“For me, captaincy has been a huge part of my life, but there's also a part of me that wants to have a bit of fun and release the pressure a little bit.”
Despite stepping away from the formal leadership position, Brigginshaw said mentoring teammates remains a priority.
Broncos great addresses renamed meeting room
Speaking at Brisbane's Clive Berghofer Centre, Brigginshaw also addressed attention surrounding a club meeting room being renamed in her honour.
The room previously carried the name of former Broncos captain and club legend Gorden Tallis.
Tallis and the Broncos hierarchy have experienced tensions in recent years following public criticism of the club.
Brigginshaw said she believed the honour reflected her long term contribution to Brisbane.
“I've been here a very long time, and I've worked in the community the whole time I've been here, so I believe I deserve what that room represents.”
She said discussions with Broncos chief executive Dave Donaghy helped explain the club's decision.
“I spoke to Dave Donaghy about it, and he congratulated me on what I've been able to do.”
Brigginshaw dismisses tension with Tallis
Brigginshaw rejected suggestions there was any personal issue between herself and Tallis.
Instead, she framed the decision as recognition of both her loyalty and the importance of women's rugby league within the club.
“I'm a one club player, and I'm proud to say that. I'm very loyal to this club and always will be.”
“There was nothing between me and Gordie.”
“Dave just thought I was the right fit moving forward and, as a female player, I think we deserve a room here.”
End of an era approaching for Broncos icon
Brigginshaw's final season will mark the conclusion of one of the most influential careers in NRLW history.
She has been central to Brisbane's success since the competition began and remains one of the most decorated players in women's rugby league.
Her decision to step down creates an opportunity for new leaders while allowing the veteran to focus on enjoying her final campaign.
Although the captaincy will change hands, Brigginshaw's role within the Broncos setup appears certain to remain significant throughout her farewell season.
