Newcastle Knights forward Jermaine McEwen has been referred to the NRL integrity unit after being charged over an alleged driving incident that will be heard in court later this month. The 21 year old second rower remains named to play Melbourne on Friday night despite the matter now being under review. The development comes during a breakout season for McEwen, who has become one of Newcastle's most reliable performers.
Reports indicate McEwen has been charged with low range drink driving and driving with a suspended licence.
The club confirmed it informed the NRL integrity unit after McEwen notified Newcastle officials about the matter.
Knights confirm integrity process underway
Newcastle released a brief statement on Wednesday acknowledging the matter while declining to comment further.
“A thorough process continues to be undertaken by all parties required,” the club said.
“Until due process is completed, the Newcastle Knights will not make any further comment.”
The NRL integrity unit will now assess the situation while legal proceedings continue.
Despite the ongoing investigation, McEwen has been selected in Newcastle's squad for Friday night's clash against Melbourne at AAMI Park.
At this stage there has been no indication of immediate changes to his playing status.
Breakout season interrupted by off field issue
The development comes during what has been a significant year for McEwen on the field.
The young forward has established himself as an important figure in Newcastle's pack under coach Justin Holbrook.
McEwen has missed only 21 minutes across his past 12 consecutive appearances this season, developing into a consistent 80 minute edge forward.
His performances have helped Newcastle rise to fourth place on the ladder.
The 21 year old has become one of the more notable success stories within the club's development system after progressing through junior pathways.
Long term commitment signed recently
McEwen's rise was rewarded only last month when Newcastle extended his contract through until the end of 2028.
The deal reflected both his strong form and the club's confidence in his long term future.
McEwen was previously recognised as Newcastle's 2023 SG Ball player of the year before progressing into first grade.
His emergence has provided valuable depth and consistency during one of the club's stronger campaigns in recent seasons.
Focus shifts to legal process and integrity review
The matter will now proceed through both the legal system and the NRL integrity process.
Neither the club nor the league has provided a timeline regarding potential outcomes while proceedings remain ongoing.
For Newcastle, attention now shifts toward balancing the ongoing review with preparations for Friday night's match against Melbourne.
McEwen's availability and future status may become clearer once further details emerge through court proceedings and integrity investigations.
