The Ethan Strange State of Origin selection debate is building after the 21-year-old five-eighth helped New South Wales beat Queensland 22-20 in last Wednesday’s series opener.
Strange was called into the starting side after Mitchell Moses suffered a hamstring issue in camp, and his performance has put him in the frame to keep the No.6 jersey for Game Two at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on June 17.
The discussion follows another major Blues storyline, with Laurie Daley earns backing after New South Wales State of Origin comeback after the dramatic opening win.
Strange credits Moses and Cleary
Despite outside debate over his selection chances, Strange said Moses and Nathan Cleary were key influences before his Origin debut.
“Moey (Moses) and Nathan are massive. Whenever I ask questions, they are always there to help me out, and they’ve got such smart football brains, so they never make it feel like it’s a burden when I’m asking,” Strange said.
“Just the way they see the game, they’ve obviously got experience and are some of the best halves in the game.
“Just even watching them at training, and the way they do things, and go about their work is (inspirational).”
Strange backed up his Origin audition with a strong display for Canberra Raiders in their 26-12 win over North Queensland Cowboys on Sunday.
Five-eighth call looms for Daley
Laurie Daley now faces a difficult halves decision before Game Two, with Moses pushing to reclaim his starting role if cleared.

“I’m only 21 years old, so I’ve definitely still got a lot to learn about the game of footy,” Strange said.
“I’ve just got to keep trying hard for Canberra and training hard, and when I get in there, just being a sponge off those two boys, Moey and Nathan.”
Another selection issue has emerged after Blayke Brailey fractured his right arm against Manly Sea Eagles.
Strange backed Canberra Raiders hooker Tom Starling as a possible replacement after his busy performance against North Queensland Cowboys.
“Starlo (Starling) is in outstanding form. He has passion and everything for the game,” he said.
“If he was there, he would kill it.”
