Jai Arrow Queensland camp plans will give the Maroons an emotional lift in Sydney as they prepare for the State of Origin opener against New South Wales at Accor Stadium on May 27.
The 30-year-old South Sydney forward has medically retired after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease, but Queensland players want him around the group as they prepare for Game One.
The Maroons’ build-up comes during another major rugby league week after Cameron Ciraldo Bulldogs pressure built before Melbourne Storm clash, while official State of Origin updates are available through the National Rugby League website.
Maroons Rally Around Arrow
Arrow played 12 games for Queensland and built a strong reputation as one of the side’s most committed forwards.
Queensland forward Reuben Cotter said the squad had been hit hard by the news.
“We will be thinking about him and it will be good to see him when we get down there next week,” Cotter said on Thursday.
“All the boys will be drawing inspiration from him next Wednesday night.
“It is a pretty scary disease MND and to see what it has done to him in such a short period of time is the most scary thing.”
Capewell Praises Arrow’s Fight
Maroons veteran Kurt Capewell said Arrow’s toughness and personality made him a loved figure in the Queensland group.
“I am devastated for Jai. He is a good mate and I’ve had plenty of good times with him both on and off the field,” he said.
“I know he is a fighter and I am sure he is going to fight.
“He was very aggressive and he would never let you down. He was one of those players who everyone wants to play with.
“For the time being it is about getting around Jai and making sure he is alright. He is one of those blokes who is glass half full.”
Origin Spirit Carries Extra Meaning
Capewell said it would be “awesome” to see Arrow in camp if he feels ready.
Arrow’s 178-game career included stints with Brisbane Broncos, Gold Coast Titans and South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Cotter said he would always remember Arrow as “a great bloke on and off the field.”
Arrow will face MND with the support of his partner Berina as they care for their infant daughter Ayla.
