The South Sydney Melbourne Storm Anzac Day clash resulted in a historic shift in power as the Rabbitohs dismantled the hosts 48-6 at AAMI Park.
In a clinical display, South Sydney Rabbitohs secured their first ever win in Melbourne, ending a 28 year hoodoo that spanned 21 consecutive matches.
The result leaves Melbourne Storm reeling from their sixth straight loss, a dismal run the club has not experienced since the era before Craig Bellamy took charge.
While South Sydney celebrates a landmark victory, other clubs are dealing with intense pressure during this holiday round as records fall across the league.
Rabbitohs Rampant in One Sided Affair
South Sydney Rabbitohs were nearly flawless in the opening forty minutes, racing to a 24-0 lead while Melbourne Storm struggled with errors and missed tackles.
Alex Johnston crossed for a double, while Latrell Mitchell proved a constant threat by creating scoring opportunities for his outside backs.
Tallis Duncan stole the show in the second half, scoring a hat-trick and physically dominating the Melbourne defensive line.
Campbell Graham also added two tries to the tally, punishing a Storm side that completed just 12 of 19 sets in the first half.
Storm Slump to Historic Low
The 42 point margin represents Melbourne Storm’s worst ever result at AAMI Park and their biggest defeat in over two decades.
Superstar coach Craig Bellamy reportedly delivered a massive halftime spray before leaving the senior players to solve their own tactical issues on the field.
To make matters worse, halfback Jahrome Hughes was forced from the field with an apparent arm injury, leaving a massive void in the Storm’s playmaking ranks.
Sua Faalogo provided the only highlight for the home fans, scoring a brilliant individual try after a clever short kick-off.
What the Result Means
Melbourne Storm now sit in a precarious position with only two wins for the season, placing their finals hopes in serious jeopardy.
South Sydney Rabbitohs, meanwhile, have proven they can win anywhere, though the calf injury to Brandon Smith remains a concern.
