Lachie Ash has received a $5,000 misconduct fine following his heated exchange with field umpire Jordyn Pearson during the Greater Western Sydney Giants’ Round 19 loss to Essendon on Sunday. The penalty was increased because the standard fine for abusive language was judged insufficient for the incident.
Lachie Ash reacted after being penalised for holding the ball when tackled by Essendon player Hussien El Achkar near the goalsquare late in the third quarter. The Greater Western Sydney Giants defender pointed towards Jordyn Pearson and argued the decision, resulting in a 50-metre penalty.
The decision came alongside confirmation that Darcy Fogarty’s three-game ban was upheld by the AFL Tribunal.
The Match Review Officer charged Lachie Ash with engaging in an act of misconduct rather than abusive language towards an umpire. That classification allowed the Match Review Officer to set the higher penalty.
“The sanction for such an offence is at the absolute discretion of the match review officer, who has determined a $5000 fine is payable by Ash with no reduction available for an early guilty plea.”
Lachie Ash can challenge the charge at the Australian Football League Tribunal. The league said it would not comment further until the matter was finalised, with full details available in the official Australian Football League match review report.
Essendon forward Kyle Langford was also offered a one-match suspension for a high bump on Stephen Coniglio. Western Bulldogs player Joel Freijah received a fine for umpire contact, the club’s fifth such offence this season.
