Dean Young has been appointed permanent head coach of the St George Illawarra Dragons on a two-year contract following a months-long search. The decision, confirmed on Monday, ends speculation over who will lead the National Rugby League club through its 2027 rebuild.
Dean Young had served as interim coach since Round 8 before receiving unanimous backing from the club’s board and shareholders. Chief executive Tim Watsford said the appointment was based on Dean Young’s football plan, player relationships and recruitment strategy rather than his history with the club.
Elsewhere in rugby league, Wakefield Trinity defeated Bradford Bulls in a five-try win.
“Leading this great club is a privilege, but I understand that it also comes with responsibility and pressure,” Dean Young said.
The 42-year-old played 209 first-grade matches for the St George Illawarra Dragons and helped the club win the 2010 premiership. Dean Young also represented New South Wales and Australia before moving into coaching.
His coaching career has included assistant roles with the North Queensland Cowboys, New South Wales and Tonga. The St George Illawarra Dragons confirmed the appointment through an official club announcement.
Dean Young takes permanent control with the St George Illawarra Dragons sitting at the bottom of the ladder during a difficult 2026 season. However, the team has not lost by double figures since Round 14 and has shown more fight during the past month.
The 2027 roster will include new recruits Keaon Koloamatangi, Luke Metcalf and Scott Drinkwater. Their arrivals will give Dean Young fresh options as the St George Illawarra Dragons attempt to return to finals contention.
