Scott Dureau, the former Newcastle Knights halfback who became a Catalans Dragons star, has died aged 39 following a long cancer battle. Catalans Dragons confirmed the news on Monday night, with reports stating that Scott Dureau died from brain cancer.
“A former iconic player of the club, he had been courageously battling the illness for several years,” Catalans Dragons said in an official club statement. “Beyond the exceptional player that he was, Scott was a man cherished by all those who had the privilege of knowing him.”

Scott Dureau played 42 National Rugby League matches across four seasons with Newcastle Knights between 2007 and 2010. Scott Dureau later made 97 appearances during four years with Catalans Dragons in the Super League.
The talented playmaker earned selection in the Super League Dream Team in 2011 and 2012. Scott Dureau also received the Albert Goldthorpe Medal in 2012, an award considered the Super League equivalent of the Dally M Medal.
Scott Dureau retired from professional rugby league in 2015 and later returned to Newcastle Knights in a coaching role. His playing career ended after doctors removed a tumour from behind his eye, beginning a cancer battle that continued for more than a decade.
Catalans Dragons president Bernard Guasch and the club offered condolences to Scott Dureau’s wife Libby, daughters Imogen and Everly, family and friends.
