Nathan Cleary’s future with the Penrith Panthers has attracted fresh speculation as the champion halfback approaches the final season of his contract. The four-time premiership winner is contracted through 2027 and could test the National Rugby League market for the first time.

The Penrith Panthers remain confident Nathan Cleary will sign a new deal before rival clubs can negotiate with him from November 1. However, reporters Dean Ritchie and Brent Read have offered different views about his next move.

The contract debate follows news of a shock Toby Rudolf extension with the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks.

Dean Ritchie believes the New Zealand Warriors could tempt Nathan Cleary with the chance to build a new legacy alongside his brother, Jett Cleary. Nathan Cleary was born in New Zealand, while his father, Ivan Cleary, previously coached the New Zealand Warriors.

“I think the Warriors are a big chance of getting him,” Dean Ritchie said.

Brent Read reported that Penrith Panthers officials expect to secure Nathan Cleary before the market opens. “I think he’ll stay. I think they’re very confident they’ll get a deal done before November 1,” Brent Read added.

Brent Read also raised the PNG Chiefs as a possible destination if Nathan Cleary wanted a new test and a bigger contract. He estimated the halfback could earn close to $5 million per season because of tax incentives, although no offer has been confirmed.

Dean Ritchie dismissed the PNG Chiefs theory and also ruled out rugby union and the Super League. Perth remains another possible option discussed ahead of 2028.
