Scott Pendlebury has dismissed claims he could continue his AFL career with another club in 2027 if he leaves Collingwood Football Club. Coach Craig McRae addressed the report during a Collingwood Football Club press conference on Thursday, July 16, as questions grow about the record-holder’s future.
The VFL/AFL games record-holder has played 437 matches for Collingwood Football Club since debuting in 2006. A report suggested Scott Pendlebury could take an on-field mentoring role elsewhere, similar to Luke Hodge’s late-career move to Brisbane Lions.

Scott Pendlebury Controls Retirement Timeline
Craig McRae said: “'Pendles' said it's not the truth. That decision (on his future) is his to be made whenever he wants to make that.”
Scott Pendlebury also said during Seven Network’s coverage of the Melbourne Football Club and Richmond Football Club match that he had not decided whether to play a 22nd season.
“I'm enjoying my footy and taking it day by day,” Scott Pendlebury said.
The midfielder turns 39 in January and has spent more time in attack during the 2026 season. That role has allowed Collingwood Football Club to prepare younger midfielders for greater responsibility while keeping Scott Pendlebury involved around goal.
Craig McRae Explains List Strategy
Collingwood Football Club could also pursue Brisbane Lions midfielder Lachie Neale during free agency. His possible arrival would further reduce Scott Pendlebury’s midfield minutes if the veteran plays in 2027.
Craig McRae also clarified his earlier “players not picks” comments, saying they did not fully reflect his recruiting beliefs.
Craig McRae said: “We have a more balanced view of everything - we can't just be all picks and we can't be all just players.”
