Rowan Marshall is reportedly likely to request a trade from St Kilda Football Club after the 2026 AFL season, with the Geelong Cats again viewed as a possible destination. A move would give the contracted ruckman a chance to pursue a regular first-choice role.
Marshall remains contracted through 2027, meaning St Kilda Football Club can reject any request or demand a strong return. His position has changed since Tom De Koning arrived and became the club’s leading ruck option.
The report comes as clubs plan for the off-season, while the Fremantle Dockers close in on a second minor premiership at the top of the AFL ladder.
Geelong Cats remain interested
“He's got a year remaining on his contract so St Kilda is entitled to keep him again, but my information is that he is highly likely to seek a trade at the end of the year,” Tom Morris said on SEN Breakfast.
“People close to him believe that he will do so again. Not because he doesn't like St Kilda, not because he has a bad relationship with Ross Lyon, he just wants to be the No. 1 ruck and have opportunity.”
Morris added: “Geelong still very much in the frame.”
Marshall requested a move to Geelong last year, but the clubs did not complete a deal. The AFL’s report on that trade request also confirms his contract runs until the end of 2027.
Why Marshall fits Geelong
Marshall could become Geelong’s main ruckman and allow Mark Blicavs to spend more time in other roles. His mobility and work around the ground would also suit the system used by Geelong coach Chris Scott.
No formal request has been lodged for the coming trade period. St Kilda Football Club still holds the stronger negotiating position, and Geelong would need to satisfy the club before any move could proceed.
