Moises Henriques has ended his professional playing career after the Sydney Sixers decided not to offer him a Big Bash League contract for the 2026-27 season. The 39-year-old retires as Australia’s most-capped domestic cricketer, having played 420 matches across his career.
Several Big Bash League clubs expressed interest in signing Moises Henriques, but the former New South Wales captain could not picture himself playing against the Sydney Sixers. His decision ends a long association with both New South Wales and the three-time Big Bash League champions.

Sydney Sixers Decision Brings Career to an End
“Unfortunately for me, I haven't been offered a contract with the Sydney Sixers for the upcoming season,” Moises Henriques said.
“After a bit of deliberation, I have decided that it's time for me to call stumps on my BBL career and any playing commitments for NSW cricket moving forward.”
Moises Henriques played 110 first-class matches for New South Wales, including 33 as captain, and won three Sheffield Shield titles. He also made 112 domestic one-day appearances and helped New South Wales win five titles.
His Twenty20 career included 38 matches for New South Wales and 160 appearances for the Sydney Sixers, where he won three Big Bash League titles.
Cricket Provided a Sense of Belonging
Moises Henriques represented Australia in four Test matches between 2013 and 2016. He also played 16 One Day Internationals and 24 Twenty20 Internationals.
Born in Funchal, Portugal, Moises Henriques moved to Australia with his family when he was one year old. He said cricket helped him gain confidence after struggling to fit in during his early school years.
“I felt very fortunate that cricket gave me an opportunity to feel like I belonged in the community.”
