Jayden Lennox claimed a career-best 5-19 as New Zealand defeated the West Indies by five wickets in Monday’s second ODI at Guyana National Stadium. The result delivered New Zealand’s 400th ODI victory and levelled the five-match series at 1-1.
The West Indies collapsed from 0-63 to 138 all out in 36 overs before New Zealand reached 5-141 from 32.4 overs. Tom Latham and Michael Bracewell completed the chase with 104 balls remaining despite a sharply turning surface.
Elsewhere in international cricket, the Bazball era ended as Brendon McCullum left a mixed England Test legacy.
Jayden Lennox sparks West Indies collapse
John Campbell scored 43 and Ackeem Auguste made 18 as the West Indies produced a solid opening partnership. Their dismissals began a collapse of 10 wickets for 75 runs.
Mitchell Santner bowled Keacy Carty for 18 before Jayden Lennox removed captain Shai Hope for seven. The left-arm spinner then dismissed Sherfane Rutherford, Gudakesh Motie, Matthew Forde and Vitel Lawes.
Jayden Lennox completed his first five-wicket haul in only his seventh ODI appearance. His figures were the third-best recorded by a New Zealand spinner in the format.
Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner claimed two wickets each, while Mark Chapman completed the run-out of Alzarri Joseph. Amir Jangoo’s 24 was the only other West Indies score above 20.
Tom Latham controls difficult chase
Henry Nicholls and Will Young added 35 for the opening wicket before the West Indies fought back. Will Young made 28, while Mark Chapman was run out for a second-ball duck following a direct throw from Vitel Lawes.
Daryl Mitchell and Tom Latham rebuilt with a 42-run partnership, but Khary Pierre removed Daryl Mitchell for 28 and bowled Dean Foxcroft for zero. New Zealand were suddenly under pressure at 5-96.
Tom Latham remained unbeaten on 37 and Michael Bracewell finished on 24 not out as the pair guided New Zealand home. Michael Bracewell also passed 1,000 career ODI runs during the partnership.
