Big Bash League India opener plans have been confirmed, with Perth Scorchers to begin their title defence against Melbourne Renegades at Chennai’s M. A. Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday, December 12.
The match will follow the scheduled fourth day of Australia’s first Test against New Zealand at Optus Stadium, giving cricket fans a packed opening weekend across formats.
The fixture adds another global angle to Australian domestic cricket after Chris Lynn’s Vitality Blast century pushed Northamptonshire into the knockout rounds overseas.
Perth Scorchers Keep Home Schedule
Perth Scorchers will not lose a home game by travelling to India, with Melbourne Renegades holding nominal hosting rights for the match.
The move comes as Melbourne Renegades operate under Cricket Victoria’s caretaker mode during a planned merger process with Melbourne Stars.
WA Cricket chief executive John Stephenson called the fixture a rare chance to grow the Perth Scorchers brand.
“We have players who already resonate deeply with Indian fans throughout their Indian Premier League experiences, and this fixture gives the whole Club an invaluable chance to connect with millions of new supporters,” Stephenson said.
“Protecting our home schedule, however, was a priority. We head to Chennai with excitement, and come home to the full suite of five regular season home games our members and fans deserve.”
Scorchers Embrace Chennai Challenge
Perth Scorchers general manager Kade Harvey said the squad understood the scale of the occasion.
“To open the season in front of what could be the most-watched game in the history of Australian domestic sport is an incredible privilege, and one the group will embrace,” Harvey said. “Equally important to us is that we return home with a strong footprint at Optus Stadium, a ground where we have played some of the best cricket in this competition’s history. “Keeping that competitive advantage is central to how we defend our title, and planning is well underway for another exciting campaign.”
Official tournament details are available through the Big Bash League.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are expected to speak about the fixture in Melbourne.
