Zach Merrett received firm backing from interim Essendon coach Dean Solomon after managing only 11 disposals in Sunday’s 90-point AFL loss to Brisbane Lions at the Gabba. The defeat left Essendon with a 1-16 record and raised further questions about the club’s confidence under pressure.
Brisbane Lions led by 95 points at three-quarter time after restricting Essendon to 15 points. Essendon kicked seven final-quarter goals, but the late response only reduced the margin to 22.17 (149) to 8.11 (59).
The struggles facing rebuilding clubs have also shaped player decisions, including Brandon Starcevich’s West Coast Eagles move based on long-term faith.
Zach Merrett had only five touches by halftime and finished below 20 disposals for just the second time this season. The former Essendon captain entered the match averaging 27 disposals and five tackles.
“I’ll keep protecting Zach because for me and the coaching group, and he’s been sensational,” Dean Solomon said.
“Yes, he had a down game today. I can’t knock Zach. I’ve got to be fair and take all things into consideration.”
Brisbane Lions produced nine multiple goalkickers, including former Essendon ruckman Sam Draper. The official AFL match centre confirmed the Round 18 result and full match statistics.
“When the opposition apply the pressure, we can’t handle the pressure at the moment. It’s a lack of confidence and belief,” Dean Solomon said.
Dean Solomon replaced Brad Scott in May but has not spoken with Essendon president Andrew Welsh about coaching beyond 2026. His immediate task is improving how Essendon players affect games without possession.
