Christian Pulisic criticism has grown after the United States men’s national team lost 4-1 to Belgium in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
The AC Milan forward struggled in Seattle and later left the match with a microfracture and bone bruise in his right leg after a challenge involving Youri Tielemans.
The debate arrives during a wider look at national team futures, including Socceroos 2030 World Cup squad predictions after Australia’s tournament exit.
Pulisic Blame Ignores Team Failure
Pulisic had a poor game against Belgium, but the defeat was not his alone. The United States men’s national team were second best across the pitch, with passing errors, defensive gaps and little control in possession.
Malik Tillman scored, while Folarin Balogun had limited service, but no American player truly took hold of the match. Belgium punished those mistakes and turned the Round of 16 tie into a heavy defeat.
Pulisic’s post-match injury comment also drew backlash after being read as a wider response to the elimination.
“I just twisted my ankle and sprained my ankle … it’s just frustrating to end like that, of course. But now I get time to rest, so it’ll be OK.”
That answer was about his leg, not a casual reaction to the end of the United States’ World Cup campaign.
Record Still Deserves Context
Pulisic has played 90 matches for the United States men’s national team and scored 33 goals.
His best moments include the winner against Iran at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, two goals against Mexico in the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League final and a hat-trick against Panama in 2022 World Cup qualifying.
Official tournament news and results are available through the FIFA World Cup.
The Belgium performance deserves scrutiny, and Pulisic will know that. But turning one bad night into a case against his entire national team career ignores what he has given the United States over several years.
