Socceroos 2030 World Cup squad planning has already begun after Australia’s Round of 32 penalty shootout loss to Egypt ended a promising 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
The defeat still stings, but the bigger picture is clear. Tony Popovic’s side left North America with one of the youngest and most exciting Australian groups in years.
The focus now shifts to how the next cycle may look, with Socceroos World Cup coverage expected to follow a squad built around Patrick Beach, Lucas Herrington, Alessandro Circati, Jordy Bos, Nestory Irankunda and Cristian Volpato.
Young Core Gives Australia A Strong Base
Australia reached the knockout stage for just the third time in Socceroos history, and many of the players who carried that run should still be in their prime in 2030.
Goalkeeper Patrick Beach, defenders Lucas Herrington, Alessandro Circati and Jordy Bos, plus attackers Nestory Irankunda and Cristian Volpato, all started against Egypt and are aged 23 or under.
Former Socceroos winger Tommy Oar told SBS the talent pool feels different from recent eras.
“I think we have the most exciting young squad that we’ve had in a number of years, since I can remember,” Oar said.
“Maybe the Golden Generation players [from the 2006 World Cup] playing at very good clubs across the world, but also at the very start of their careers.”
Popovic had already pointed fans toward the future before the 2026 tournament. “Will they be better in four and eight years? Without a doubt,” he said.
Official national team updates are available through Football Australia.
Goalkeepers: Beach Leads The Next Race
Patrick Beach looks the clear favourite to become Australia’s long-term No.1 after a breakout World Cup campaign.
Mat Ryan may try to reach a fifth World Cup, but he will be 38 in 2030. Joe Gauci and Steven Hall should also push hard for squad places.
Gauci has Aston Villa pedigree and started several qualifiers before falling behind Ryan and Beach. Hall, now with Brighton, was a standout as the Young Socceroos won the Under 20 Asian Cup.
Defence: Familiar Names And Fresh Pressure
Harry Souttar should remain central to Australia’s plans, with the 27-year-old captain again among the Socceroos’ best players in 2026.
Alessandro Circati, Lucas Herrington, Jordy Bos, Jacob Italiano and Kai Trewin also project as strong 2030 options, especially if Australia keep using a back five.
Dylan Leonard could be the next major defensive name. The 18-year-old has already debuted for Schalke 04 and can also play as a defensive midfielder.
Lewis Miller may finally get his World Cup chance after missing 2026 with an Achilles injury, while Manchester United youth prospect James Overy could add depth on the right.
Midfield: Okon-Engstler Brothers Could Shape Future
Aiden O’Neill should be one of Australia’s senior leaders by 2030, while Paul Okon-Engstler looks close to a lock if his move from Sydney FC to Europe arrives.
Riley McGree could return after injury ruined his 2026 hopes, and Cammy Devlin may offer another experienced option if club form holds.
Alex Robertson remains a live chance after being cut from the pre-tournament camp, while Gianluca Okon-Engstler brings a rare family storyline.
Gianluca has played for Italy at youth level, but with brother Paul in green and gold and father Paul Okon on the Socceroos staff, Australia will hope that pull is strong.
Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli is the boldest pick. The Chelsea teenager has England youth links and France interest, but his Australian mother gives Football Australia a real reason to chase.
Attack: Irankunda And Volpato Headline The Firepower
Nestory Irankunda should be one of Australia’s main attacking weapons by 2030 if his club career keeps rising.
Cristian Volpato committed to Australia before the 2026 World Cup and gave the Socceroos spark on the right. Connor Metcalfe also looks likely to stay in the attacking group after a reliable campaign.
Mohamed Toure had a quiet World Cup after strong club form with Norwich City, but his age and scoring record keep him in the frame.
Antonio Arena may become another major allegiance battle after representing Australia and Italy at youth level. The Roma striker scored with his first touch on professional debut in the Coppa Italia.
Daniel Bennie offers pace and flexibility after impressing with Queens Park Rangers and Australia’s youth teams. Garang Kuol would be the comeback story if he forces his way back after rebuilding at Sparta Prague.
