USMNT vs Australia carries extra tension before Friday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Group D match in Seattle, with Christian Pulisic still working back from a calf issue after the United States’ opening win over Paraguay.
Pulisic missed the second half against Paraguay and did not train fully earlier in the week, leaving head coach Mauricio Pochettino cautious over his availability. The match matters because victory for either the United States men's national team or Australia would put them close to a knockout-round place and in a strong position to top the group.

Pulisic Fitness Under Watch
Pulisic’s status has drawn added focus because the last meeting between the United States and Australia in October was physically demanding.
Jason Geria fouled Pulisic twice inside the first half-hour of that exhibition match, though Geria later said there was no intent to injure him.
“We’re a physical team,” he said, “and we’re up for a fight regardless of the opponent.”
Chris Richards, who became captain after Pulisic’s injury in that match, was unhappy with the refereeing.
“They’re lucky it was a friendly. I was ready to go.”
Pochettino said Pulisic had improved but did not confirm whether he would play in Seattle.
Australia Offer Counterattack Threat
Australia arrive with their own confidence after Nestory Irankunda scored the decisive goal against Turkey in their World Cup opener.
United States left back Antonee Robinson said Australia’s direct threat must be handled carefully.
“Australia are really comfortable defending; they put everything on the line. And obviously they’re a real threat on the counterattack,” Robinson said Wednesday.
“Training up in the next few days is going to be all about how we nullify their threats, and what positions we need to get into to exploit their back line and, obviously, try and score goals.”
Brenden Aaronson also expects a demanding match.
“We know this is going to be a very tough World Cup match. Every team is very tough,” Aaronson said. “Of course, with Australia, they made some really good runs in the last World Cup, so we need to be ready to go.”
