Canada vs Qatar produced a landmark night at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Jonathan David scored a hat trick in a 6-0 Group B win at BC Place Vancouver Stadium.
The co-hosts claimed their first World Cup victory in front of a sellout crowd of 52,497, doing it without injured star Alphonso Davies. The result matters because Canada moved to the top of Group B and set a new World Cup scoring record for a CONCACAF nation.

David Leads Canada’s Attack
Jonathan David opened his scoring in the 29th minute after controlling a pass from Tajon Buchanan and driving his finish into the right side of the goal.
He added his second in first-half stoppage time, sliding in to finish after Canada again punished Qatar inside the box. By the interval, Canada led 3-0 and had taken full control with 66% possession, 15 shots and seven on target.
Cyle Larin also scored in the first half as Canada overwhelmed Qatar from the opening whistle.
Qatar Collapse After Red Cards
Qatar’s night unravelled in the 33rd minute when Homam Ahmed was sent off after a VAR review for denying Buchanan a goal-scoring chance.
The original penalty call was overturned because the contact was ruled to have happened outside the box, but Ahmed’s yellow card was upgraded to red. Qatar were later reduced to nine men when Assim Madibo was sent off after a tackle on Ismaël Koné.
Koné was stretchered off after grabbing at his leg, with Canada’s substitutes surrounding him while he received treatment. Nathan Saliba replaced him and soon scored from a direct free kick to make it 4-0.
Canada Finish In Style
Canada kept pressing late, with Jacob Shaffelburg’s shot leading to an own goal off Mohammed Manai in the 75th minute.
David completed his hat trick in stoppage time, finishing a pass from Saliba to make it 6-0 and join Lionel Messi at the top of the Golden Boot standings. Canada finished with 33 shots to Qatar’s two and did not allow a shot on target.
The hosts also produced an expected goals edge of 4.54 to 0.18, showing how one-sided the contest became after Qatar’s discipline broke down.
