State of Origin coaches back Ashley Klein after details of the referee’s past gambling addiction became public ahead of Origin II at the MCG in Melbourne. Queensland coach Billy Slater and New South Wales coach Laurie Daley both expressed support for Klein on Tuesday, saying the matter would not affect his ability to officiate one of rugby league’s biggest matches. The issue has attracted significant attention because Klein is set to referee a crucial State of Origin encounter and his past gambling history has become a major talking point in the lead up to the game.
Klein recently confirmed he had battled a gambling addiction several years ago after reports suggested he lost approximately $400,000. The veteran referee said the gambling involved horse racing and greyhound racing only and never included rugby league betting.
The NRL has previously investigated the matter and cleared Klein of any wrongdoing.
Billy Slater Calls Public Attention Unfair
Queensland coach Billy Slater defended Klein during the official pre match media conference in Melbourne.
Slater said he believed it was unfair for personal matters from Klein’s past to become public discussion ahead of a major fixture.
The Maroons coach emphasised that the issue had not been discussed within the Queensland camp and said his comments reflected his personal opinion on the situation.
Slater also expressed sympathy for Klein, acknowledging the challenges that come with having private struggles publicly scrutinised.
His remarks highlighted the support Klein has received from key figures within the game despite the renewed attention on events that occurred several years ago.
Klein Details Past Gambling Addiction
In a statement, Klein acknowledged he experienced a gambling problem approximately seven years ago.
He explained that he sought professional help to address the addiction and subsequently closed all betting accounts associated with his gambling activity.
Klein stated that the period was difficult personally but maintained it had no influence on his work as a rugby league match official.
The referee stressed that his gambling activity was limited to horse and greyhound racing and did not involve rugby league matches.
His clarification was aimed at addressing concerns that may have arisen following the publication of details surrounding his financial losses.
The NRL reviewed the matter and determined there was no evidence of misconduct or any breach that would affect his standing as an official.
Laurie Daley Offers Support
New South Wales coach Laurie Daley also voiced support for Klein and echoed Slater’s position.
Daley said situations involving personal challenges can be difficult to navigate, particularly when they become public.
The Blues coach expressed hope that Klein had strong support networks around him to help manage the attention generated by the reports.
Importantly, Daley made clear that New South Wales had no concerns about Klein officiating Wednesday night's match.
His comments reinforced confidence from both competing teams in Klein’s professionalism and ability to referee at the highest level.
Focus Remains on Origin II
Despite the discussion surrounding Klein, attention is expected to quickly return to the football as Queensland and New South Wales prepare for a pivotal State of Origin clash at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The match carries enormous significance in the series and is expected to attract a large national audience.
Klein remains one of the NRL’s most experienced referees and has officiated numerous high profile matches throughout his career.
Both teams have indicated they are focused on their preparations rather than any controversy involving the match official.
The support shown by Slater and Daley suggests there is broad confidence within the game that Klein’s past personal struggles should not overshadow his role in one of rugby league’s showcase events.

NRL Maintains Confidence in Referee
The NRL’s previous review and clearance of Klein remains a key factor in the ongoing discussion.
League officials have consistently maintained confidence in his integrity and professionalism as a referee.
With both coaches publicly backing him and no findings of wrongdoing against him, Klein is set to take charge of Origin II as scheduled.
