State of Origin referee Ashley Klein has received strong support from Queensland coach Billy Slater and New South Wales coach Laurie Daley after reports revealed his past gambling losses. The issue emerged ahead of Origin Game II in Melbourne on June 16, 2026, creating discussion about whether Klein should officiate one of rugby league's biggest matches. Despite the attention surrounding the report, the NRL previously cleared Klein of any wrongdoing and confirmed his refereeing duties were never compromised.
Slater and Daley Defend Referee
Klein reportedly lost more than $400,000 on horse and greyhound racing. Speaking at the official match-eve press conference, Slater defended the veteran referee.
“To be honest, I personally think it’s unfair to have something personal like that to be revealed publicly. It hasn’t been discussed within our camp.”
“That’s my personal position with it, I think it’s quite unfair on him.”
Daley shared a similar view.
“I agree with Billy. It’s challenging when things like that get brought up and I just hope he’s got the right support and the people around him.”
“We’ve got no concerns with Ashley being apart of the game.”
Daley Responds to Coaching Criticism
Daley also addressed recent reports questioning his leadership of the Blues.
“I want what’s best for New South Wales. I want to win, I want the boys to win and I want to fans to win.”
Blues forward Cam Murray backed his coach, saying:
“He’s our leader and what he’s done for the jersey as a player and coach has been incredible and we want to repay all that hard work and get the win for him tomorrow.”
