Round 16 NRL Teams are headlined by several major injury returns, State of Origin selection contenders and a potential early comeback for Cronulla hooker Blayke Brailey. Team lists released ahead of this weekend’s fixtures reveal a host of clubs could receive significant boosts as the NRL season enters a crucial stage, with several players racing the clock to back up after Origin II and others returning from lengthy injury layoffs.
The Newcastle Knights could receive a timely boost with Bradman Best named to return from a hamstring injury against the St George Illawarra Dragons on Friday night. Kalyn Ponga and Dylan Lucas have also been selected despite Origin commitments, although their availability will depend on how they pull up after Wednesday’s clash.
Newcastle has included Sandon Smith among the reserves as cover after recovering from a calf injury. The Knights will also be without Jermaine McEwen, who has been suspended by the club, resulting in Thomas Cant earning a starting opportunity.
The Dragons have made only minor adjustments to their side. Luciano Leilua returns after strong performances in NSW Cup, while Christian Tuipulotu has been named in the extended squad as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury.
Saturday’s action begins with the Wests Tigers hosting the Dolphins. The surprise inclusion for the Tigers is Adam Doueihi, who has been named in the reserves despite earlier expectations he would remain sidelined for several more weeks with a shoulder injury.
The Tigers have suffered a setback with Kai Pearce Paul requiring surgery on a pectoral injury. Tony Sukkar comes into the starting side as Benji Marshall’s team continues to manage injuries across the forward pack.
The Dolphins have named an unchanged squad after their dominant victory over the Roosters. However, Origin representatives Max Plath and Kulikefu Finefeuiaki are both pushing for returns and could strengthen an already in form side.
The Gold Coast Titans face a difficult assignment against Penrith but could welcome back Queensland representatives Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Jojo Fifita. Their inclusion would provide a major boost against the reigning powerhouse Panthers.
Penrith has named several Origin stars in its extended squad, including Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo and Brian To’o. Based on previous selections, however, the Panthers may elect to rest several representative players after Wednesday’s match.
One of the most anticipated contests of the round sees the Canterbury Bulldogs host Manly. Bulldogs captain Stephen Crichton has been named despite ongoing shoulder concerns, while Kurt Mann returns from injury to strengthen the spine.
For Manly, Tom Trbojevic returns after missing time through injury. His inclusion is particularly important given Clayton Faulalo’s recent hamstring setback. Haumole Olakau’atu and Tolu Koula have also been named as the Sea Eagles look to build momentum.
Sunday’s fixtures feature several significant injury updates. The Warriors have included Mitch Barnett and Kurt Capewell on an extended bench after Origin duty, while Luke Metcalf has earned a place in the squad following a productive stint in NSW Cup.
The Cowboys receive a major boost through the return of Jeremiah Nanai from a shoulder injury. The Queensland forward has not played since Round 9 and will be eager to regain top form. Braidon Burns also returns, creating several backline changes for North Queensland.
Melbourne has named Cameron Munster, Harry Grant and Trent Loiero despite their Origin commitments. The Storm will make a final decision closer to game day, but all three have been included in the initial squad.
The Storm also welcome back Jack Howarth and Tyran Wishart from injury. Their returns add valuable depth as Melbourne prepares for a tough clash against Canberra at AAMI Park.
The Raiders have resisted major changes despite recent struggles. Savelio Tamale returns from concussion protocols, while Hudson Young and Ethan Strange have both been selected pending their recovery from Origin duties.
The final match of the round could deliver two of the most remarkable injury comebacks of the season. The Sydney Roosters have named all available Origin representatives, including James Tedesco, Sam Walker, Reece Robson and Lindsay Collins.
Meanwhile, Cronulla hooker Blayke Brailey has been included on the extended bench despite suffering a fractured arm only a few weeks ago. If selected, it would represent an extraordinary recovery and potentially place him back into representative discussions later in the season.
The Sharks have also listed Nicho Hynes as he nears a return from a calf injury. Along with Addin Fonua Blake and Briton Nikora, Cronulla could field one of its strongest lineups of the season if all players are cleared to take the field.
With Origin recovery, injury returns and selection battles dominating headlines, Round 16 shapes as one of the most significant weekends of the NRL season. Several clubs could be transformed by the return of key personnel, while others face critical decisions balancing player welfare with the importance of securing competition points.
