Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal made his long-awaited return to the mound on June 13 at Progressive Field in Cleveland, just 38 days after undergoing elbow surgery. Although the Tigers fell 3-1 to the Cleveland Guardians, Skubal's comeback was the main talking point as the reigning American League Cy Young winner flashed elite velocity and encouraging signs during his first appearance since April 29.
Skubal Shows Power Despite Defeat
Skubal worked 4⅔ innings, allowing five hits, three runs, two earned, while striking out four batters and walking one. His trademark changeup looked sharp early, helping him record a strikeout in the opening inning.
The left-hander also reminded everyone why he is one of baseball's premier pitchers. On his 11th pitch of the afternoon, Skubal fired a sinker at 99.9 mph, the fastest pitch of the game. He also delivered several other pitches above 99 mph, showing that his arm strength remains intact after surgery.
Guardians Capitalize on Key Opportunity
The biggest moment came in the third inning when Daniel Schneemann connected on a 98-mph fastball and launched a two-run homer over the right-center-field wall. The blast gave Cleveland a 3-1 lead and ultimately proved to be the difference.
Detroit had taken an early advantage thanks to a Dillon Dingler RBI single, but defensive mistakes and timely Guardians hitting allowed the home side to take control. Skubal also escaped a fourth-inning jam, showing composure despite traffic on the bases.
Positive Signs for Detroit
While the result was disappointing, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch saw enough positives from his ace's return. Skubal generated nine swinging strikes on 80 pitches and displayed the velocity that made him one of baseball's most dominant starters.
For Detroit, the outing was less about the final score and more about getting their staff leader back on the field. If Saturday's performance is any indication, Skubal appears well on his way toward regaining top form.
