The Pete Crow-Armstrong heroics continued on Saturday as the Chicago Cubs edged the San Francisco Giants 3-2 in 10 innings at Wrigley Field. Crow-Armstrong delivered two game-tying home runs, including a clutch blast with two outs in the ninth inning, before Michael Busch drove in the winning run in extra innings. The result helped Chicago bounce back from Friday's heavy defeat and level the series against San Francisco in front of an energized home crowd.
Crow-Armstrong Sparks Cubs Comeback
The Cubs entered the afternoon looking to respond after conceding 18 runs to the Giants a day earlier. Chicago had already experienced dramatic swings in form this season, and Saturday brought another memorable chapter.
Crow-Armstrong was at the center of everything. The Cubs center fielder finished 4-for-5 and supplied both of Chicago's regulation runs.
His first home run arrived in the sixth inning after Giants star Rafael Devers had broken the scoreless deadlock with a solo shot. Crow-Armstrong answered immediately, lifting a pitch from Landen Roupp over the wall to tie the game at 1-1.
Roupp had been effective throughout his outing, limiting Chicago's lineup to just three hits across 5⅔ innings. Cubs starter Ben Brown was equally impressive, keeping the Giants off the scoreboard for 5⅓ innings before the bullpens took over.
Giants Take Late Lead
San Francisco appeared to be on course for victory in the ninth inning.
Fresh off an eight-RBI performance on Friday, Matt Chapman continued his strong form by producing a sacrifice fly that scored the go-ahead run and handed the Giants a 2-1 advantage.
The atmosphere around Wrigley Field shifted as fans sensed another frustrating defeat. But Crow-Armstrong had other plans.
Leading off the bottom of the ninth with two outs remaining in Chicago's hopes, he attacked the first pitch he saw and launched a towering 403-foot home run to right field. The crowd erupted as the Cubs forced extra innings.
The blast extended Crow-Armstrong's excellent stretch of form. He now has four home runs over his last four games and has recorded hits in 11 consecutive contests.
Michael Busch Delivers Walk-Off Moment
With the game tied entering the 10th inning, the Cubs found another opportunity to celebrate.
Dansby Swanson began the inning as the automatic runner. Swanson had been left out of the starting lineup as part of an effort to help him reset offensively, but he still played a key role when the game was on the line.
Busch stepped to the plate and lined a ball to right field. Giants outfielder Victor Bericoto failed to handle it cleanly, allowing Swanson to race home with the winning run.
As Swanson crossed the plate, Cubs players poured out of the dugout. Busch and Crow-Armstrong embraced in celebration while fans throughout Wrigley Field enjoyed Chicago's second walk-off victory in three days.
Cubs Continue Roller-Coaster Season
Few teams have experienced more dramatic momentum swings this season than Chicago.
The Cubs previously recorded two separate 10-game winning streaks, a feat the franchise had not achieved in the same season since 1935. They then followed that success with a 10-game losing streak.
Their last three games have perfectly reflected that unpredictability:
- Walk-off win against the Athletics
- 18-3 loss to the Giants
- 3-2 walk-off win over the Giants
Crow-Armstrong's recent performances have been especially important during this stretch. After a defensive mistake against Oakland earlier in the week, he responded with late-game heroics and has continued to deliver in key situations.
Chicago will now look to build momentum from another dramatic victory as the series against San Francisco continues.
