Australian baseball star Travis Bazzana delivered another standout moment in his rookie MLB season, crushing a solo home run as the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 3 1 on Sunday. The win continued Cleveland’s impressive run of form, with the American League Central Division leaders now winning eight of their last nine games.
Bazzana, the first overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, finished with three hits in the victory and provided a crucial insurance run late in the contest at Citizens Bank Park. The Australian infielder launched a solo shot in the eighth inning against Phillies reliever Jonathan Bowlan, extending Cleveland’s lead back to two runs.
The 23 year old only made his major league debut on April 28 but continues to impress during his first month in the big leagues. His latest performance added to growing excitement around one of baseball’s top young talents.
Cleveland’s victory also secured another successful road series against Philadelphia, with the Guardians taking two of the three games across the weekend.
Bazzana continues strong rookie form
Bazzana has quickly adapted to major league pitching since his call up, showing composure at the plate and consistency in key situations.
After recording multiple hits earlier in the game, the Australian produced the highlight of the afternoon in the eighth inning. Facing Bowlan, Bazzana drove the ball deep over the fence for a solo homer that restored Cleveland’s two run advantage at 3 1.
The home run provided breathing room for Cleveland’s bullpen after Philadelphia had narrowed the margin during the seventh inning.
Bazzana’s rapid rise through professional baseball has drawn significant attention since he became the first Australian selected with the number one overall pick in MLB Draft history last year.
Parker Messick dominates on mound
While Bazzana starred offensively, rookie pitcher Parker Messick played a major role in the Guardians’ win with another composed outing on the mound.
Messick pitched five and two thirds scoreless innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out six batters. The left hander improved his record to 6 1 for the season and lowered his earned run average to 2.24.
According to franchise statistics, Messick now owns a remarkable 0.6 ERA across 30 career innings in interleague games, the lowest mark in Cleveland history.
The Guardians bullpen also closed out the game effectively. Cade Smith delivered a clean ninth inning to secure his major league leading 18th save from 20 opportunities.
Guardians extend impressive streak
Cleveland’s victory continued one of the hottest stretches in Major League Baseball. The Guardians are now 14 4 since May 6 and remain firmly on top of the American League Central standings.
Steven Kwan was another key contributor offensively, collecting three hits and driving in a run during the fifth inning. Rhys Hoskins added an RBI double in the sixth inning to help establish Cleveland’s early advantage.
Hoskins, facing his former club after spending the first six years of his MLB career with Philadelphia, doubled home Chase DeLauter for Cleveland’s second run of the afternoon.
Despite his contribution, Hoskins has endured a difficult first season with the Guardians and is currently batting .188.
Phillies unable to recover
Philadelphia struggled to generate consistent offense throughout the game despite a brief rally in the seventh inning.
Brandon Marsh sparked the Phillies with a triple to deep centre field before Bryce Harper brought him home with a sacrifice fly off reliever Tim Herrin.
However, Philadelphia could not build further momentum against Cleveland’s bullpen.
Phillies starter Andrew Painter worked six and one third innings, giving up two runs on six hits while striking out three batters. The loss dropped his season record to 1 5.
Philadelphia has now lost four of its last five games and slipped one game below the .500 mark.
Kyle Schwarber did provide a small positive for the home side, finishing two for four at the plate to end a difficult hitless streak that included 11 strikeouts across his previous 13 at bats.
Australian baseball star continues rise
Bazzana’s latest performance adds to what has already been an impressive beginning to his MLB career. The former Oregon State standout entered professional baseball with enormous expectations following his historic draft selection, and his early production has reinforced Cleveland’s belief in his long term potential.
With the Guardians continuing to win consistently and Bazzana contributing regularly in the lineup, the Australian rookie is rapidly becoming one of the most exciting young players to watch in Major League Baseball.
