Port Adelaide captain Connor Rozee has been ruled out for the remainder of the AFL season after ongoing complications from a serious hamstring injury stalled his recovery. Rozee, who has not played since tearing the tendon in his left hamstring during Port Adelaide’s match on March 22, will now focus on rehabilitation with the aim of returning for the start of pre-season later this year.
The 26 year old midfielder had been working towards a comeback but persistent nerve issues linked to the original injury have prevented significant progress. The setback is a major blow for both Rozee and Port Adelaide as the club navigates the second half of the season without its captain and one of its most influential players.
Recovery Hits Unexpected Roadblock
Port Adelaide fitness manager Tim O’Leary confirmed on Wednesday that Rozee’s rehabilitation had reached a standstill due to complications involving nerve damage.
While the repaired hamstring tendon has healed successfully, the associated nerve issue has continued to limit his recovery.
O’Leary explained that the club sought multiple specialist opinions before deciding against further surgery at this stage.
Instead, Rozee received an injection on Tuesday aimed at breaking down scar tissue around the affected nerve in the hope of improving function and reducing ongoing complications.
The club remains optimistic that the treatment will help accelerate his recovery ahead of the 2027 campaign.
Port Adelaide Focused on Long Term Recovery
Despite the disappointment of losing their captain for the rest of the season, Port Adelaide believes a conservative approach is in Rozee’s best interests.
O’Leary said the decision was made after careful consultation with medical specialists and with a focus on ensuring Rozee is fully fit when he returns to football.
The club hopes the latest treatment will allow him to resume a more effective rehabilitation program and be ready for full training during the upcoming pre-season period in October and November.
Port Adelaide officials have consistently stressed the importance of prioritising Rozee’s long term health over rushing a return to competition.
Major Blow for the Power
Rozee’s absence has been keenly felt since the early stages of the season.
As captain and one of the competition’s premier midfielders, he plays a crucial role in Port Adelaide’s ball movement, leadership and attacking drive.
The dynamic playmaker has developed into one of the AFL’s elite performers in recent seasons, regularly impacting matches through his speed, decision making and ability to win contested possessions.
His extended absence has forced Port Adelaide to rely on younger players and alternative midfield combinations throughout the year.
The loss of Rozee for the remainder of the campaign further reduces the club’s chances of mounting a strong finals challenge.
Leadership Role Continues Off the Field
Although unable to contribute on game day, Rozee is expected to remain heavily involved around the club.
O’Leary praised the captain’s commitment throughout his recovery and highlighted his continued influence within the playing group.
The midfielder has remained engaged with teammates during rehabilitation and is expected to continue providing leadership and support from the sidelines.
Club officials believe his presence around the football program remains valuable, particularly for younger players developing within the squad.
Eyes on 2027 Return
The focus now shifts to ensuring Rozee enters next season fully fit and ready to resume his role as Port Adelaide’s on field leader.
While the injury setback has ended any hope of a return this year, medical staff remain confident that his long term outlook remains positive.
The successful healing of the hamstring repair itself provides encouragement, with treatment now concentrated on resolving the lingering nerve complications.
For Rozee, the challenge will be maintaining his rehabilitation program over the coming months and preparing for a fresh start when pre-season begins.
Port Adelaide supporters will be hoping their captain can make a full recovery and return to his best form after a frustrating and injury interrupted season.
