New York's Madison Square Garden was packed for Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Tuesday, but much of the attention shifted away from the court when U.S. President Donald Trump arrived at the arena. Trump attended the clash between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs, drawing a loud reaction from fans while prompting one of the largest security operations seen at an NBA game in recent years. The event mattered not only because of the Finals atmosphere, but also because the president's appearance added another layer of attention to an already high-profile matchup.
Trump Receives Mixed Reception During Anthem
As fans settled into their seats for the crucial Game 3 contest, Trump appeared on the arena's giant screens during the national anthem. The reaction from the crowd was immediate, with boos and jeers echoing around Madison Square Garden.
The intense response added to an already electric atmosphere as the Knicks looked to extend their lead in the best-of-seven championship series. New York entered the night with a 2-0 advantage and hopes of moving one step closer to its first NBA championship since 1973.
Heavy Security Measures Around Madison Square Garden
Trump's attendance resulted in tighter security procedures throughout the area surrounding the famous venue.
Fans were instructed to arrive up to two hours before tip-off to allow time for additional screening measures. Multiple checkpoints were established around the arena, with ticket inspections taking place before supporters reached the main entrances.
Security scanners were placed throughout the perimeter, while bags were prohibited inside the venue. Officials also restricted outdoor watch parties that had become common during previous playoff games.
Several blocks surrounding Madison Square Garden were secured as members of the U.S. Secret Service worked alongside local law enforcement to monitor the event.
Celebrity Presence Adds to Big-Game Feel
Like many major Knicks playoff games, Game 3 attracted a long list of celebrities seated courtside.
Among those spotted at the arena were actor Timothée Chalamet, actor Ben Stiller, comedian Tracy Morgan, actress Tina Fey, and music icon Jay-Z.
Their presence helped create a playoff atmosphere that felt larger than life, with every possession drawing loud reactions from the crowd.
Spurs Respond in Championship Series
While much of the pre-game conversation centered on security and Trump's appearance, the action on the court ultimately delivered the biggest story of the night.
The Spurs fought back after dropping the first two games of the series, securing a 115-111 victory over the Knicks. Led by star center Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio showed greater urgency throughout the contest and prevented New York from taking a commanding 3-0 lead.
Momentum swung several times during the game. The crowd erupted whenever the Knicks threatened a comeback, but the Spurs stayed composed during key moments in the fourth quarter to close out the win.
The result cuts New York's series lead to 2-1 and gives San Antonio renewed belief heading into Game 4.
