The Jameer Nelson promotion by the Philadelphia 76ers became official on June 9, 2026, as the former NBA All-Star was elevated to Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations. The move comes during a major front-office reshuffle in Philadelphia and places Nelson directly under newly appointed President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey. The decision is important for the franchise as it prepares for the upcoming NBA Draft and the next phase of roster building.

Nelson Takes Key Leadership Role

The 76ers have continued restructuring their basketball operations department following the departure of former executive Daryl Morey. Nelson, who served as assistant general manager during the 2025-26 season, was viewed as one of the leading internal candidates for a larger role.

Instead, the organization hired Mike Gansey as president while rewarding Nelson with a promotion that makes him one of the most influential figures in the club's basketball decision-making process.

Former general manager Elton Brand will remain involved with the organization in a different capacity through Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment.

From NBA Star to Front-Office Executive

Nelson's rise within the organization has been steady. He joined the franchise's basketball operations department in 2020, working with the Delaware Blue Coats as a scout and assistant general manager.

His reputation grew after becoming general manager of the Blue Coats in 2023. In 2025, he moved to the parent club as assistant general manager, where he gained experience in player evaluation, roster management, and salary-cap planning.

Before entering management, Nelson enjoyed a 14-year NBA career that included an All-Star appearance with the Orlando Magic in 2009. He also played for Dallas, Boston, Denver, New Orleans, and Detroit.

Philadelphia Roots Remain Strong

Nelson's connection to Philadelphia runs deep. The Chester, Pennsylvania native became one of the most celebrated players in Saint Joseph's University history.

During the 2003-04 season, he led the Hawks to an undefeated regular season and earned national player of the year honors. His local ties and basketball experience have made him a respected figure throughout the region.

The 76ers also secured assistant general manager Prosper Karangwa on a multi-year extension after interest from other NBA franchises. The combination of Gansey, Nelson, and Karangwa gives Philadelphia a stable leadership group heading into a critical offseason.
