Blake Snell is set to make his Los Angeles Dodgers season debut on Saturday against the Atlanta Braves after completing his rehabilitation from a shoulder issue. The expected return comes at Dodger Stadium on the same day as Blake Snell Bobblehead Day. It also arrives with immediate significance for the Dodgers rotation after right hander Tyler Glasnow was placed on the injured list with low back spasms.
According to the California Post, Snell will take the mound for the first time this season after opening the year on the injured list because of discomfort in his throwing shoulder. His return gives Los Angeles an important boost as the club continues to manage injuries within its starting staff.
The Dodgers later confirmed Glasnow’s move to the injured list on Friday. The timing effectively creates a direct rotation swap between two former Tampa Bay Rays pitchers and removes the need for the club to make another roster adjustment.
Snell returns after lengthy layoff
Snell has not appeared in a major league game since Game 7 of the 2025 World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays. That outing marked the end of a demanding postseason run before shoulder discomfort delayed the start of his 2026 campaign.
The left hander also dealt with a lengthy injury absence last season. He missed four months because of shoulder related issues, which made the Dodgers cautious in building his workload during rehab.
Los Angeles signed Snell to a five year, $182 million contract before the 2025 season. The organization viewed him as a major addition to a rotation expected to compete deep into October, and the club has taken a measured approach to ensure he returns at full strength.
Rehab assignment showed encouraging signs
Snell made three rehabilitation starts before being cleared to return. Across those outings he threw four innings and struck out 10 batters.
While the innings total remained limited, the strikeout numbers provided a positive sign that his stuff remains sharp. The Dodgers were comfortable allowing him extra time rather than pushing him back before he was fully ready.
That patient approach reflects the team’s long term priorities. Snell is expected to play a major role over the remainder of the regular season and into the postseason, making durability as important as immediate results.
In 11 regular season starts last year, Snell posted a 5 and 4 record with a 2.35 ERA. He also produced a 1.26 WHIP and recorded 72 strikeouts across 61 1/3 innings.
His postseason contribution was equally valuable. Over six playoff appearances he struck out 41 batters while posting a 3.18 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP in 34 innings.
Glasnow exits after early departure against Houston
Glasnow’s injury follows a concerning early exit during Wednesday’s start against the Houston Astros. He completed one inning and warmed up for the second before calling for the trainer and leaving the game.
Immediately after the outing, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts suggested an injured list stint appeared unlikely. According to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register, Roberts maintained that position even after Glasnow underwent an MRI on Friday.
The later announcement indicated that circumstances changed over the course of the day. The Dodgers ultimately placed the right hander on the injured list with low back spasms, adding another health concern to a rotation that has already faced multiple interruptions.
Glasnow had been an important part of the Dodgers pitching plans. His absence now places greater attention on the timing of Snell’s return and how quickly the left hander can settle back into a major league workload.
Dodgers make roster move
To fill Glasnow’s roster spot, Los Angeles called up right handed reliever Paul Gervase.
The move gives the Dodgers additional bullpen depth while also simplifying the rotation picture. With Snell returning on Saturday, the club no longer needs to decide which starter would have been moved out of the five man group.
Managing innings and preserving health will remain a central theme for Los Angeles over the coming weeks. The club has enough depth to absorb short term absences, but maintaining stability in the rotation remains essential as the season progresses.
Immediate impact against Atlanta
Saturday’s game against Atlanta now carries added attention. Snell’s return gives the Dodgers a proven front line arm at a time when another key starter becomes unavailable.
His debut will also offer an early look at where he stands physically after the layoff. The Dodgers are unlikely to push him deep into the game in his first outing back, but his command, velocity and ability to miss bats will be closely watched.
For a team with championship expectations, getting Snell back healthy could become one of the more important developments of the early season.
