The Rahim Mundine boxing debut with No Limit turned the Newcastle Entertainment Centre into a cauldron of noise on Wednesday night as the son of Anthony Mundine secured a controversial victory.
The 24 year old prospect moved to 3-0 after earning a unanimous decision over Queenslander Lance McDonald, despite the local crowd raining down boos as the scorecards were announced.
The tension in the arena mirrored the high stakes seen in other major domestic bouts, such as Callum Peters' dominant performance against American competition.
Embracing the Family Legacy
Rahim ‘CJ’ Mundine appeared unfazed by the hostile reception, shrugging off the crowd’s displeasure as a natural extension of his father’s polarising career.
“My dad is the most hated athlete ever in this country ever, so it’s understandable,” the young fighter remarked backstage after the bout.
He stated that if fans want to view him as a villain, he does not care, noting that he has been around such scrutiny his entire life.
Tactical Breakdown and Future Plans
While Rahim Mundine started strongly with cleaner shots in the opening rounds, he admitted that his conditioning faded in the later stages of the five round contest.
Lance McDonald, known for his eccentric weigh-in attire, proved more durable than expected and landed several heavy shots that tested the newcomer's chin.
Mundine intends to stay in the super welterweight division for the next 18 months while he learns his craft under coach Lincoln Hudson.
Dealing with the Pressure
Despite having a former world champion in his corner, the young athlete is focused on building his own journey rather than living in a shadow.
“You have to take it on the chin and deal with what you’ve got,” Mundine said regarding the pressure of his famous surname.
He believes his superior skills were evident early on but acknowledges he needs to work on his breathing to maintain that level throughout a full fight.
