Rising star Callum Peters Joeshon James boxing fans on Wednesday night as the Australian middleweight secured a lopsided decision victory at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre.
The 2024 Olympian extended his perfect professional record to 7-0 by dismantling the Californian challenger over ten grueling rounds, leaving his opponent with a severely swollen right eye.
The victory adds further heat to a night of high intensity combat, following the tense weigh in exchanges seen earlier on the Tszyu vs Diaz card.
Clinical Performance and a Knockdown
Callum Peters displayed relentless aggression from the opening bell, walking forward and landing punches in bunches against a man who has famously sparred with Canelo Alvarez.
The turning point of the match arrived in the fourth round when Callum Peters dropped Joeshon James with a perfectly placed left rip to the body.
The Australian dominated the statistical battle, landing double the strikes of his rival to earn scores of 100-89, 100-89, and 99-90 from the judges.
Post Fight Reactions
“I feel good,” Callum Peters said following the announcement. “I’m working hard and it’s all working out.”
Promoter George Rose praised the young talent for handling a significant step up in competition against a dangerous international opponent.
“He [James] came down here to stop 50 Cal … but Cal has got a huge future,” Rose said in the ring.
Ruston Shines on the Undercard
Earlier in the evening, light heavyweight Kirra Ruston showcased his own potential by stopping Turk Berkay Varol in just three rounds despite a heavy cut.
Ruston relied on a flurry of body shots to finish his unbeaten rival while battling through blood that partially obscured his vision.
